A child can turn mud into a cake, a stick into a magic wand, and a puddle into an entire \u201csea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"858\">\n<p data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"858\"><strong data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"737\">Independence and confidence<\/strong> \u2013 when a child gets dirty and sees that it\u2019s okay, they gain the feeling that they can explore the world without fear.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"903\"><strong data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"901\">Mess as part of emotional development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"1182\">Games that involve getting dirty are often also a way for a child to express emotions. Jumping in a puddle after the rain can be a burst of joy, rolling in the grass an expression of excitement, and making \u201cleaf soup\u201d a form of exploration and control over their environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1292\">When we allow them to get messy, we send the message: <em data-start=\"1238\" data-end=\"1290\">\u201cYour curiosity matters. You are free to explore.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1320\"><strong data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1318\">What can parents do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1616\">\n<li data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1373\">\n<p data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1373\">Dress your child in clothes that can get dirty.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1485\">\n<p data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1485\">Instead of saying \u201cdon\u2019t,\u201d offer boundaries: <em data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1483\">\u201cYou can play in the sand, but stay out of the flower beds.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1554\">\n<p data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1554\">Bring a change of clothes \u2013 this will make you more relaxed too.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1616\">\n<p data-start=\"1557\" data-end=\"1616\">Accept that a little mud means a lot of joy and learning.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1637\"><strong data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1635\">Final message<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1888\">Children\u2019s hands covered in paint, muddy shoes, or sand in their hair \u2013 none of these are signs of neglect, but of a lively, healthy, and curious childhood.
